Forgetful angler sinks two cars in a year
Second time unlucky: Dave Lovelady's Fiesta being pulled out of the water
By Paul Whitehouse
A CARELESS angler has been left reeling after he sunk two cars on disastrous fishing trips.
Absent minded Dave Loveday's first blunder came a year ago when he parked his car by the water's edge during a fishing match.
Mr Loveday, 67, forgot to put on the handbrake and as he stood chatting to pals his Vauxhall Astra hatchback rolled into 12ft of water and had to be written off.
Twelve months later he blundered again in a carbon copy incident when his £400 Fiesta rolled into the water at another fishing lake.
He was left to foot the bill for both disasters because he was only insured third party.
The retired taxi driver's first mishap was at Hayfield Fisheries, near Doncaster during a fishing match.
He forgot to put on the handbrake and as he stood chatting his car rolled into 12ft of water and had to be written off.
Mr Loveday lost the Fiesta at Ranskill, near Retford, when it rolled into the water.
Mr Loveday, from Gleadless, Sheffield, said: "The first car was a Vauxhall Astra, it cost me £1,500 and never let me down. I was able to park close to the peg I had drawn for the competition which was handy but it was right next to the lake.
"I was there all day fishing and the car never budged. Then I went to talk to some of my mates, I heard a crackling noise and when I looked round it was rolling into the water."
The second time he sat in the car warming himself by the heater on a cold day when he saw a friend down the bank.
"I got out of the car but forgot to put on the handbrake, again." Mr Loveday thought it was the vibrations from a passing train that started the car rolling.
