A PROPOSED pedicab taxi service has been given support by Skegness town councillors.
A limited service was offered by the Skegness Pedicab Company during the summer but it was only able to operate on a prescribed route as a tourist attraction rather than as a taxi.
The company is now seeking permission from East Lindsey District Council to allow it to operate as taxis which will mean the pedicabs can pick up and take fares anywhere in the Skegness area.
Skegness town clerk Tony Cumberworth said the company was looking to use the taxi rank outside Barlife, on the corner of Scarbrough Avenue, as its base.
Some councillors expressed
reservations before offering support for the application.
Couns Pat Phillips and Sue Binch shared concerns about it causing friction with other taxi firms in Skegness and about safety.
Coun Phillips said: "I have got issues about the safety of them all year round. The sea front is one thing but Skegness is a very busy place and people could be vulnerable."
But then she acknowledged there had been a similar enterprise in Skegness many years ago which was successful and pedicabs would be eco-friendly.
Couns Dick Edginton and George Saxon thought it would be a great tourist attraction, and Coun Phil Kemp pointed out they are popular in China.
ELDC's licensing committee will make a decision in January or February.
