Police in Sheffield are warning taxi drivers in particular to ensure that nothing valuable is left on display and that their vehicles are left secure when unattended.
Over the last five days the Brincliffe and Nether Edge areas of Sheffield in particular have seen at least five incidents where money has been stolen, particularly from taxis where floats have been left in unattended vehicles. The majority of this crime is occurring between early evening through until the early hours of the morning, when thieves are breaking into the vehicles whilst they are parked up for the night.
Police are urging taxi drivers in particular to make sure that they do not leave any money or any valuables in their vehicles when left unattended.
Inspector Craig Patchett from the Sharrow Safer Neighbourhood Area said: "We have seen an increase in the number of these incidents where thieves are seizing the opportunity to target taxis with the possibility of finding unattended money inside. Taxi drivers are urged to ensure that all valuables including their money floats are removed and that their vehicles are left locked and secure."
Anyone with any information about this crime is urged to contact PC Philip Bungay from the Sharrow Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0114 296 3187 or call Crimestoppers anonymously.
