Killer Arthur Hutchinson

ONE of Sheffield's worst ever killers who murdered three members of the same family before brutally raping a fourth was today told he will die in prison by a top judge.
Arthur Hutchinson, who is in his 60s, is serving three life sentences in prison after gatecrashing a wedding reception and slaughtering the bride's father, mother and brother in Dore in 1983.

Hutchinson, a drifter and womaniser known as The Fox, was convicted in 1984 of the savage knife murders of solicitor Basil Laitner, his wife Avril and their son, Richard, at their plush home on the night of daughter Suzanne's wedding.

After the horrific murders Hutchinson, a petty criminal who was on the run from police, brutally raped the butchered couple's 18-year-old daughter before calmly calling himself a taxi.

Hutchinson is one of only a small number of British murderers who have been told by the Home Secretary that, in their cases, "life means life" and they should never be released.

Today, after reviewing the case at London's High Court, Mr Justice Tugendhat ruled there was "no reason at all" for disagreeing with the Home Secretary that Hutchinson must die in jail.

The judge at his trial had recommended a minimum jail term of just 18 years. But, when asked to restate his view, the judge had said it was "genuinely a life case".

The then Lord Chief Justice, Lord Lane, said in 1988: "I do not think that this man should ever be released, quite apart from the risk which would be involved".

Through his solicitors, Hutchinson had told Mr Justice Tugendhat that the Home Secretary's involvement in setting his minimum jail term - and the "whole life" tariff itself - were violations of his fundamental human rights.

He tried to convince the judge that his tariff should be reduced to 18 years, as recommended by the trial judge who heard all the evidence.

But Mr Justice Tugendhat refused to grant Hutchinson an oral hearing of his bid to overturn his whole life tariff.

The judge said: "These were exceptionally serious murders and it is right that Hutchinson should remain in prison for the rest of his life by way of punishment."

Other killers serving whole life sentences include Moors murderer Ian Brady, Rose West and Dennis Nilsen.

That was horrific, and no I don't remember it when it happened but my dad recounted the full gory details of the case tonight. Good decision by the courts then?
