A teenager rang for a taxi using cockney rhyming slang and was left with a cabinet

A teenager rang directory enquiries to book a taxi but end up having office furniture delivered, because she told the operator she wanted a “cab, innit!”

The 19-year-old from London needed to get to Bristol International Airport from her home.

She tried to book a taxi but used the cockney rhyming slang ”Joe Baxi” to the confused operator who told her they were unable to find anyone by that name.

The short-tempered woman snapped back, saying: "It ain't a person, it's a cab, innit!"

The operator responded to the request by locating Displaysense, the nearest supplier of cabinets, and put the woman through to the company.

She then started speaking to an equally confused saleswoman and fumed: "Look love, how hard is it?

"All I want is your cheapest cab, innit. I need it for 10am. How much is it?"

The saleswoman responded by saying it would cost £180.

The teenager wasn't put off by the figure and gave her address details before saying: "I wanna pay by card, 'cause I got no cash."

The company received an enraged phone call the following morning when the woman, who was expecting a taxi, was sent one of their retail/office cabinets instead.

Displaysense, which specialises in display equipment, have now apologised with the mix up and agreed to refund her.

Steve Whittle, marketing manager at Displaysense, said: "We thought it was a joke at first but the girl was absolutely livid.

"Because she spoke in 'Ali G' style slang, her order was mixed up somewhat.

"She was absolutely baffled as to why she had a big glass display cabinet delivered outside her house, when all she wanted was a taxi to take her on holiday.

"We apologised and gladly offered the young lady a refund on the display unit she received and suggested that maybe she should speak a bit clearer on the phone.

"Our sales team deal with thousands of customers and a range of different accents but on this occasion they were really stumped.

"We still don't know if she made it to the airport on time but she did ask our delivery driver if he could give her a lift."
