PITTSFIELD — A city man was sent to the hospital with minor injuries this morning after a taxi he was riding in slammed into the back of a Pittsfield Water Department truck.
The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. today on West Street, across from the driveway of Crosby Elementary School.
Kirk Mungin of Pittsfield was riding in the back of a car from the Rainbow Taxi fleet when the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a parked city maintenance truck.
"The car just slid," said taxi driver Thomas Prosser, 20, of Pittsfield.
A driver's side airbag was deployed when the front passenger side hit the truck. The headlight and windshield were both damaged on that side.
The driver was unharmed but Mungin, who was sitting in the rear passenger side was tossed inside the car upon impact.
The passenger was transported to Berkshire Medical Center.
No one was in the water truck at the time. Workers had pulled over on the crest of the hill in response to a reported water main break down the road.
Slippery road conditions were reported across the county and the Northeast this morning, thanks to a wintery mix which coated the
region.
Pittsfield Police Officer Marc Maddalena had not yet determined whether road conditions or speed were a factor in the accident, but said it was likely that Prosser was driving up the hill and didn't see the truck parked there early enough to stop.
