Kirklees Council to introduce penalty system for cabbies

Kirklees Council has outlined new plans to impose harsh penalties on cabbies whose operations are found to be falling below legal standards.

Under the new proposals, a penalty points system is to be imposed on local taxi drivers, with those operators who accrue 12 points receiving a month-long suspension, reports the Huddersfield Daily Examiner.

An automatic 12 points would be given to those found to be driving without insurance, while smaller penalties would be handed out for discretions such as unreasonably prolonging a trip or providing false licence application information.

Christine Iredale, chairwoman of the council's licensing and safety committee, stated that this will allow for rogue drivers to be disciplined in a more formal way.

She added: "We need to make sure that taxi drivers adhere to their licence conditions by doing things like keeping their vehicles in good working order and wearing their badges."

Earlier this month, the Batley & Birstall News reported that the council has also recently introduced new-look taxi plates to make it easier for clients to recognise legitimate vehicles.
