Taxidrivers to protest in Limerick
By John Hogan
UP TO 100 Limerick taxi drivers, who say part-time drivers are robbing them of their livelihood, will march through the city this Friday.
The protesting taxi drivers are saying that experienced drivers in the city are being forced out of the business by "moonlighters" who have a regular job during the week and are driving taxis part-time at the weekend.
There has been a 500 per cent increase in the number of plated taxis in the last seven years since the industry was deregulated but no significant rise in the population.
Secretary of the Limerick Taxi Association, Phillip Hayes, said that it is now too easy for someone to buy a taxi licence only to use it at the weekend when demand is highest.
The protest will go from Pery Square to City Hall at 3pm, and is expected to cause significant delays for motorists.
