Bus Gate and Lane Enforcement Around Castlegate
The bus gate at Bridge Street and Castlegate bus lane are the next in the city to begin enforcement action.
Sheffield City Council is urging motorists to adhere to restrictions to avoid enforcement action.
As with other bus gates in the city, motorists will receive warning letters initially before full enforcement begins. Warning notices will advise drivers that they have illegally driven down the bus lane or passed through the gate. Once full enforcement starts drivers flouting the restrictions will be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) and a fine of up to £60.
Councillor Bryan Lodge, Cabinet Member for Transport and Streetscene at Sheffield City Council said: “We don’t want to fine motorists, we want drivers to obey the rules and help keep buses moving across the city. Using the bus lanes or gates may seem to take time off an individual motorist’s journey but this is usually at the expense of others on the road. We want them to be used for the purpose they are intended: to give priority to public transport passengers.”
Every year millions of journeys are made by people travelling throughout Sheffield on public transport. Bus and tram services are an essential part of the city’s transport system and need to be protected if they are to run efficiently and on time.
Councillor Lodge continued: “Sheffield is one of a group of authorities including Nottingham and Manchester, who have adopted new powers to introduce bus gate and lane enforcement. This type of enforcement has previously only been allowed in London. We want to make sure motorists are aware of the enforcement action that will be taken for ignoring restrictions.”
Enforcement of the Bridge Street bus gate and Castlegate bus lane is part of a rolling programme across the city. Others will begin enforcement once the infrastructure is in place.
