LIVERPOOL, England: Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage stemming from an alleged argument with a taxi driver in Liverpool, police said Tuesday.
The incident took place in the Wavertree area of Liverpool earlier this month. Barton was questioned and released on bail until further questioning in May.
The 24-year-old Barton has a history of controversy. In February, Portsmouth fans complained that Barton made an obscene gesture toward them and, in October, he was fined 2,000 pounds (US$3,900; €2,900) for dropping his shorts at Everton fans.
On Sunday, Barton angrily threw his shirt at Manchester City fans who jeered the players after the 2-0 loss to Blackburn in the FA Cup quarterfinals.
In July 2005, Barton was sent home from Man City's tour of Thailand and fined six weeks' wages after a bar fight with a teenage Everton fan.
Barton's brother, Michael, was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison in 2005 for taking part in a racist attack in which two white men killed a black teenager with an ax.

Aftab, Do you mean the people from the Manor or the footballers? Don't think for one moment that Joey Barton would last 2 mins on the Manor, he's not tough enough, what do you think?
