Sit in the back of the car.
Always use a taxi or licensed minicab. Carry the phone number of a trusted, licensed company.
Taxis (Hackney Carriages) can be hailed in the street. They look like purpose-built taxis or black cabs and have an illuminated taxi roof sign.
Licensed cabs cannot be hailed in the street. They must be pre-booked.
Drivers should have ID and the vehicle should have a licence displayed –on the back of the car and often on the dashboard. Make a note of it if you feel unsafe.
If possible, book a taxi or cab in advance. Ask for the driver's name, as well as the make and colour of the car.
Confirm the driver's details when they arrive – is it the taxi or cab you ordered?
If ordering a cab from a public place, don't let people overhear your name and address – anyone could pretend to be your cab.
If you chat to the driver, don't give out personal details.
Never use taxis or cabs that are not licensed. If you do you could be getting into an illegal, uninsured vehicle.
