This topic was posted on the QandA with Licensing section and because that section gets locked as soon as the question is answered by the licensing section, I thought we could well have interest in debating this on here

I agree one hundred percent with your sentiments sir. The conduct of some of the drivers new and old is despicable. Overtaking, even on the wrong side to get ahead only so that they can pick up the next fare on route, and stopping next to a queue of waiting cabs to pick up passengers, or stopping dead in middle of the road to pick up passengers holding up traffic for a long while is a regular occurrence. Having said that I can't see what the Licensing section of the council can do about it other than point out the byelaws and much of the idiotic behaviour isn't covered by the official rules.

Unfortunately a Hackney Carriage Licence allows that person to "ply for hire" within the controlled district, this being Sheffield City boundaries, there is no legilation that can be used to force a driver, to use designated hackney ranks, and unless the vehicle is illegally parked or causing an obstruction of the highway, then there is very little an officers may do. Officers will always ask drivers to move to the nearest rank, if the deem that the vehicle is obstructing the highway, or illegally parked, as is the case with problems that arose around Leopold Street and Rudyard Rd. Common courtesy between drivers is exactly that, courtesy between drivers and it is not for the Council to set this standard, and we have no legislation to do it if we tried to set a "courtesy standard". Of course a complaint from a driver in relation to another licensee will be considered as with all complaints and will be investigated following the current procedures. You would have to make your complaint in writing to the Taxi Licensing Section.

It prety much clears up the idea that someone else can sort out what respect drivers have for each other. We the drivers in the trade have to set standards and we have to abide by the etiquette of the trade which many new drivers are yet unaware of. I agree 100% what the cabbie has said about blocking road off to pick up or doing stupid u turns in the road. driving dangerously too. I can see the council can't do anything about it but does that mean the drivers can't either??

very good point brother. we need drivers helping each other. All come to do same job so why we try to rob other drivers and destroy taxi trade? we shoud respect more each other first and we will get respect from everybody.
