A PROTEST by taxi drivers is set to cause town centre chaos in Scunthorpe today.

A convoy of 70 cabs is expected to join a demonstration centred around Pittwood House, the head quarters of North Lincolnshire Council, from 12pm.

Local cabbies have warned they will drive in a circle from the Queensway roundabout to the Rowland Road roundabout and back again– a move likely to cause extensive delays.

Mr Kuljinder, spokesman for 300 local cabbies, said: "We apologise in advance to motorists who might get caught up in our demonstrations.

"But we feel this is the best way of showing how strong the feeling is over securing local jobs."

But the warring drivers been warned they face prosecution if disruption is caused and motorists have been urged to find alternative routes during the protests.

Chief Insp Simon Walker said: "Humberside Police will allow lawful protests to go ahead and will seek to minimise disruption to other road users and ensure there is no danger to public safety in the case of roads potentially becoming gridlocked.

"Officers will identify any offenders who cause disruption and will seek to prosecute if required."
